June Plans and WIP

I have two projects I’m working on this month.  A lace scarf called Travelling Roses Scarf and another pair of knee high socks.  I just started the socks today but I’m about a third done with the scarf.

This should be the last pair of knee high socks before I finally post my pattern.  This is my test pair now that the pattern is completely written up.  I’ve had this yarn for a long time so I’m happy to be getting around to using it.

I picked the lace scarf because it’s pretty and not a pattern repeat that I can easily memorize.  I have no idea what I’m going to do with it when it’s done.  I don’t wear red so I won’t keep it for myself.  Maybe I’ll do a giveaway on the blog or I might keep it for a Christmas present for someone.  I guess I’ll see how it turns out and if anyone has any interest in it.

I’m liking the pattern quite a bit, it’s easier to see in the closeup, but it’s a big pain and very obvious when your count gets off.  I’ve had to very carefully tink my rows a few times.

I can’t wait to see this blocked.

Warning: Beware Circular Needle Lengths

I did it again.  I always forget that a 16″ circular needle does not mean the cable is 16″ but that the entire needle  from tip to cable to tip is 16″.  Am I the only one who does this?  It wouldn’t be so bad except that to get a 16″ circular needle the needle tip portion ends up so much smaller!

Look how much smaller the needle tip is with 24″ vs 16″ circular needles.  The 24+” fixed circular as well as the interchangeable needle tips are all the perfect size.  Sometimes I want just a little bit smaller of a cable and this is how I got into my current mess.  I go down to 16″ and end up with a tiny needle tip that I now have to hold differently and that messes with my tension and gauge.

I have no excuse for this.  The Knit Picks circular needle description says how the needles are measured.  It’s very clear and even tells me how long the needles tips are. I just can’t seem to get it to stick in my head. I’m hoping that next time I’m tempted to buy 16″ circular needles I will look back here and remember the reason is a was a bad idea the first time and an even worse idea the second time.  If I’m lucky there will be no third time.

I realized my mistake pretty quickly while I was knitting my new pair of socks.  The tension isn’t as consistent and it’s taking a little bit longer to get any progress on them. I’ve just finished the heel and I have new 24″ needles coming in this week.  Hopefully my socks speed up after that.

30 Days of Knitting Questions – Day 3

Continuing my posts from the tumblr account Crafts and Such that has a list of 30 knitting questions; one for each day.

Day 3: Do you have any other WIPs (works in progress)?

I’m glad I was looking ahead in the questions or I would have answered this yesterday.  I have two other projects I am working on right now.  I’m making another pair of socks as I write my first pattern.  My first pattern is for basic knee high socks and this second pair I’m knitting will test out the pattern for any errors.  This time I’m making striped socks with the yarn below.

The other project is another scarf for my sister.  It’s still in the planning stages for now.  I’ll talk to her about it over Easter and see what she thinks.  Right now I’m thinking of trying an infinity drop stitch scarf knit in the round. It will be different in that the dropped stitches will be horizontal instead of the vertical drop stitches that are more typical.

30 Days of Knitting Questions – Day 2

Day 2: What is currently on your needles?

I’m working on a lace scarf that I am absolutely in love with.  I’m in love with the yarn more than anything.  This is definitely one I’m keeping for myself.  I started it while I was on vacation down in FL but decided to finish my socks first after I was back home.  The scarf pattern is on Ravelry and the yarn is Knit Pick’s Shimmer Lace –  Bayou.  Here’s a WIP photo from a few days ago.

I keep thinking it looks like peacock feathers more than anything.  Especially with the larger YO holes.  I’ll have to see how it looks once it’s blocked and the pattern is really visible.

Bonus – Sneak Preview Infinity Scarf WIP

Here’s a bonus – two posts in the same day =)

The main thing I am working on right now is an infinity scarf for my sister, the one in the Chicago area not FL.  Since I had my camera out for the Snowflake Hat I decided to take a few extra pics so my sister could see her scarf progress (Anyone who doesn’t knit – the green circles are stitch counters so I can keep track of the pattern. They are not part of the scarf):

The pattern is for the Ambigram Scarf on Ravelry.  I’m about 30% done. The only modification I’ve made is to use smaller beads and a slightly larger gauge.  The beads were a last minute idea and I didn’t want to go too over board with the larger beads.  Plus I already had the 11/0 white seed beads.

I’m liking the pattern and this is my first time using beads as well.  My biggest concern at this point is that the scarf has too much brown in the color.  It’s one of those colors that seem to change depending on what it’s next to. Hopefully it will work with the outfit my sister has planned.
