I love knee high socks but they are a pain to make.  It takes double the time and it’s hard to knit a pair that stay up without sagging or slouching.  So I am now on a mission to write my first pattern.  I will keep making knee high socks and rewriting the pattern until I get perfect knee high socks, or at least as close as I can get.  I realize of course that they will only end up perfect for me but I will try to add tips for adjusting my pattern for everyone else.

I’ve got the first version hand written from knitting these up and will start adjusting it as I wear my socks over the next few days and find where the fit is wrong.  These socks are very basic.  They are toe-up socks knit in mostly stockinette with the exception of a slip stitch heel and ribbed cuff.  It’s the same basic template found in most beginner’s books or patterns but that is exactly what I want.

As a side note, wow do I love the new(ish) Capretta yarn from Knit Picks.  The only complaint I have is that they need more colors.  I was petting the yarn when I first got it and now I’m petting my feet & legs while I wear my socks.  Not to mention I can’t stop wiggling my toes.  I love this yarn.

30 Days of Knitting Questions – Day 1

I was reading blog posts during lunch one day and came across a reference to a tumblr account Crafts and Such that had a list of 30 questions; one for each day. Since I have not been blogging as much I want I thought this would be a great start for the new month.

Day 1: What was your first finished project?

I’m so glad this question asked about the first finished project as I had lots of learning “projects” I abandoned.  The very first project I completed was a purple hat with a gray ribbed brim.  It was a hat that I knit flat and then sewed together. I remember being so upset that I used the mattress stitch in purple and then I could see it on the gray brim that was rolled up.This is also the one and only hat that I did not make in the round.

My very next project was cabled fingerless gloves from Knitty called Fetching.  I was ambitious after finishing that hat; I had to learn cables, DPNs, and a new bindoff.  Not ambitious enough to use the nice cashmere yarn it called for but I did finish them in a nice safe acrylic. Plus wanting those gloves is what got me started knitting in the first place.  I had forgotten that.  I think I ended up with 3 pairs of these.
