30 Days of Knitting Questions – Day 27

Continuing my posts from the tumblr account Crafts and Such that has a list of 30 knitting questions; one for each day.

Day 27: How do you acquire most of yarn? Online retailers, local yarn shops, swaps, or large chain craft stores? What’s your favorite?

Almost all of my yarn is bought online from Knit Picks. Actually almost all of my knitting supplies are bought here too.  I love Knit Picks.  I love their wood harmony needles and I love their prices.  I’m not sure if I’ve ever bought a pattern (not including pattern books) anywhere else.  My only complaint is they seem to have an aversion to interchangeable circular size 4 needles.  I’ve had two pairs now that I had to request replacements; the first because it couldn’t completely screw onto the circular cable and the second because it was a size 5 and not a size 4.

I’ve tried other online retailers and either the price was too high or their site was not well done in terms of searching for the yarn I wanted.  I’ll occasionally walk into some of the LYS but the selection is limited and the prices are higher.  It’s a nice treat sometimes to try something completely new but it’s definitely a luxury and not a common source for yarn.

I do buy at the large chain craft stores but it’s always for projects that would not work well for wool. This is mostly baby stuff or my repeated failed attempts at knitting toys. However, with Knit Picks new Brava line that might change as well.  My friend Laura bought some and it felt like really nice acrylic and it’s just as inexpensive as those big craft stores.
