30 Days of Knitting Questions – Day 24

Continuing my posts from the tumblr account Crafts and Such that has a list of 30 knitting questions; one for each day.

Day 24: Have you ever made your own pattern or dyed your own yarn? How did it turn out?

I have never tried to dye my own yarn.  I have enough problems picking out colors I can’t imagine that it would be a good idea to dye my own.

I have made up my own patterns but they have all been improvised.  I’ve never formally written up a pattern or written complete instructions.  That’s what I’m currently trying to do with my knee high socks.  Everything I’ve improvised I’ve been happy with but it’s all been basic stuff.  One day I’m hoping I’ll come up with some of my own designs but I think that’s pretty far down the line right now.

  1. I’ve never dyed my own yarn and probably never will. I have designed my own patterns many times. When I first started knitting after college, I knit my husband a sweater from a pattern and several baby outfits for friends. But for me, I’ve never been able to make a sweater for me that fit right from a pattern. Part of that is that I’m rather tall and big, so I need to add length to most patterns. I found a book on designing your own knits and have made myself one sweater, and one child’s sweater that each of my kids wore in turn. I decided that knitting human-sized items take way too long and so I turned to making smaller things.

I have mostly designed and knitted doll clothes for my daughters’ American Girl Dolls or Barbies for the past decade until they outgrew playing with dolls. I’m now knitting up new samples so that I can publish the patterns for others to knit. We’ll see how it goes.
