30 Days of Knitting Questions – Day 23

Continuing my posts from the tumblr account Crafts and Such that has a list of 30 knitting questions; one for each day.

Day 23: If you had the supplies (and patience) for it, what project would you start today?

I would start a wedding ring shawl.  This is a bit weird since I’m single and highly doubt I will ever want to get married. The idea is that this the shawl is so finely knit it can be pulled through a wedding ring.  I would be very delicate and time consuming work. I like lace work and this seems to be the ultimate project in lace work.

I wouldn’t start a wedding ring shawl without some serious motivation.   I do have nieces so I guess one of them might like it if I ever did make one. Sadly, I think they’d be just as happy with a store bought shawl than a hand knitted one.  If any of them end up with a personality that a hand knit wedding shawl is important to them I might reconsider.  It just doesn’t seem to be highly valued or modern enough for my generation much less the next.

  1. There’s a woman I see regularly who wears a full length, ribbed knit cardigan with furry yarn cuffs and collar that looks so cool on her. If I had the yarn and the patience, I would make me one of those, probably in black or a deep purple.

Most of the stuff I knit is small – doll clothes, scarves, maybe a child sweater or a shrug for my teenage daughter. I’ve only knitted two adult sized things in my life: a sweater for my husband which he got for the first and second Christmases after we were married, and a sweater I call my 8-year sweater because it took me 8 years to finish it. I got so bored with it that I’d work on it for a few weeks and then toss it in a drawer for months on end. But I did finish it and have worn it so much now that the elbows are wearing through.

I don’t think I’ll have the patience, or time, or money to knit anything full length for me (or anyone else for that matter!). But I really, really like the look of that long, slim cardigan and those furry cuffs …

    • I’ve never actually knit a sweater. I have the hardest time shopping for clothes that fit that I can’t imagine the frustration of knitting something just to find it doesn’t fit. I think I will knit a cardigan before a sweater because there is more room for error fit wise. Maybe this fall I’ll try it. No furry cuffs though, I don’t think I could pull that off =)
