30 Days of Knitting Questions – Day 21

Continuing my posts from the tumblr account Crafts and Such that has a list of 30 knitting questions; one for each day.

Day 21: Do you knit gifts for friends and family for the holidays or birthdays?

For the last two years I’ve knitted Christmas presents for my family.  Most of my first posts on this blog were for my finished Christmas presents.  With my family we all make Amazon wish lists and buy each other stuff from there.  This works great because it usually prevents duplicate gifts and people get what they actually want.  I like asking for knitting stuff that is just a little too expensive for me to justify buying on a whim.

However, this does mean that there are few surprises.  I’m not much for being surprised myself and honestly those surprises are bad more often than not, but I still like the idea of giving a gift someone isn’t expecting. That’s why I like knitting stuff.  I can knit whatever I want and it doesn’t matter if they hate it.  I already bought the gifts from their wish list, the knitted stuff is just a little extra something I thought they might like and wanted to try out.

What’s been bugging me is I can’t figure out if I should ever knit a gift for another knitter.  I can’t figure out if they would appreciate it more because they know how much work goes into it or if they would have just rather knit it themselves.  I think I would prefer yarn rather than have someone knit something for me but I’m not sure.  I’m sure I would hate myself for it but I can’t help but think I would be thinking how if they’d just used a different fiber, or a slightly different shade, or maybe a different yarn weight it would be so much better. I really have no idea. Nobody has ever knitted anything for me and I’m a little bit afraid of my reaction if someone ever does.  Especially if it’s a surprise.
