30 Days of Knitting Questions – Day 15

Continuing my posts from the tumblr account Crafts and Such that has a list of 30 knitting questions; one for each day.

Day 15:  What was your least favorite pattern and why?

There were no patterns that really stood out as for me so I had to dig a little for this one.  If I had to pick any pattern I would say I didn’t like it would be Knit Pick’s Montavilla Market Bag.  I started this bag back in March 2011 and it’s one of my few UFOs that is still hanging around.  Usually I’ll just completely frog a project this old and maybe I will do that later today.

So why do I not like it?  Here’s why:

1. It calls for all four colors of Knit Picks Simply Cotton Organic Worsted Yarn.  This was a double hit.  First it’s cotton and we all know how I feel about cotton.  Second at the time they only had three of the colors available (now there’s only one).  This made the pattern easy to mess up as I constantly tried to adjust for it.

2. It required a provisional cast on which I didn’t get at the time and seriously messed up without realizing it.

3. It required picking up stitches which is yet another task I’m not particularly fond of.  I have since gotten over this for the most part.

4. It had “lace work” before I really understood that and knew how to fix mistakes in these cases.  There were lots of mistakes and it was not the pretty pattern it should have been

5. I desperately wanted this bag but not only was I messing up constantly it looked way smaller than I had anticipated.  It was a disappointment all around.

Now I really want to go back and try this again.  I would frog it completely and start over.  I’m a lot better at just about everything that caused me to fail horribly the first time.  Altering patterns is almost second nature now, a provisional cast on is annoying but doable, picking up stitches is not much of a challenge, and I love lace work. This cotton was one of the nicer ones so if I pace myself that shouldn’t be an issue either.

Maybe instead of a reminder of a completely depressing project this can turn into a reminder of just how much I improved in a year.  My poor socks.  I think they’re about to be pushed to the side again and I’ve barely started on them.  I’m not sure I even have the toes done!
