30 Days of Knitting Questions – Day 9

Continuing my posts from the tumblr account Crafts and Such that has a list of 30 knitting questions; one for each day.

Day 9: What fiber or yarn do you love working with?

I love working with wool.  I’m particularly partial to soft wools such as alpaca, merino and of course cashmere.  Now that I think about it wool is kind of weird.  Growing up I always though wool was just the hair from a sheep.  Wool isn’t just about sheep at all.  Wool can come from goats, alpaca, camels, and even rabbits.  There’s a lot more animals than that I’m sure.

Are there even any other animal fibers that aren’t wool?  Everywhere it says wool is the most common animal fiber but then I don’t see anymore really listed.  I’ve seen silk, but I have a hard time thinking of silk as an animal fiber.  I think it needs its own category like bug fiber.  What are the other animal fibers and why aren’t they considered wool?  I think I remember seeing a really good fiber book at one point.  I’ll have to see if I can find it at the library because now I’m curious.

Anyway, I like wool because it is forgiving, versatile, and easy on the hands.  Any minor tension mistakes or issues can be blocked out.  Wool can be felted or you can get a super wash version for easy care.  Maybe the most important is that it flows easily and I don’t feel like I’m fighting with the yarn as I knit.  With cotton and sometimes acrylic I really feel like I’m fighting the yarn.  I’m not sure why it feels so different but I know that it really does.  You can feel the sigh of relief whenever I can go back to a wool project.

  1. I am super in love with wool these days. I am trying to find a fabric soft enough for my EXTREMELY sensitive mother, and she’s rejected basically everything except silk. Bug fabric. I like bug fabric well enough, but merino! It’s so nice!
