30 Days of Knitting Questions – Day 4

Continuing my posts from the tumblr account Crafts and Such that has a list of 30 knitting questions; one for each day.

Day 4:  How did you learn how to knit?

I’m a self taught knitter.  I’d been picking up different hobbies for years and none of them really stuck past a couple of months or maybe a year.  Knowing this I headed to the library and borrowed a couple of beginner’s knitting books and this DVD.

I love this DVD by Nici McNally.  I can’t even remember what books I borrowed but I remember this.  The DVD was perfect for someone like me who knew absolutely nothing about knitting.  A lot of beginner books are for people who already have some sort of knitting knowledge and I had none.

I never bought it myself because by the time it was due back at the library I had the basics down and didn’t need it anymore.

I did try some other DVDs and books but they didn’t add anything to my learning experience.  After I had the foundation from this DVD I picked out patterns and knitted them.  Or at least tried to.  When I ran into something I didn’t know how to do I usually went to Knitting Help to watch their videos on how to do different techniques.

I can’t remember at what point I was really comfortable and would say I knew how to knit. I was frustrated and confused quite often but one day it just clicked and I “got it” and everything magically made sense.  Sadly that means the only advice I have is to learn the foundations and just keep knitting.
